A world that is fast changing, needs new skills to meet newer demands. As a result, old school thoughts are becoming obsolete and new methods of work are replacing the old ones. What is six sigma?

Six Sigma (6σ) is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects leading to process improvement. You may wonder when tools of six sigma were first used. Well, it was introduced by American engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986. Post this, Jack Welch made it central to his business strategy at General Electric in 1995. Six sigma emphasizes cycle-time improvement while at the same time reducing manufacturing defects to a level of no more than 3.4 occurrences per million opportunities. In other words, the system is a method to work faster with fewer mistakes.

In recent years, Six Sigma has evolved into a more general business-management philosophy, focused on meeting customer requirements, improving customer retention, and improving and sustaining business products and services. The tools and techniques apply to all industries.

My Observation:

I just looked at the number of six sigma jobs in India. The number is 8648. Salary mostly is around Rs 100,000. As per 2018 records salary of six sigma green belt holder can be upwards of $104,099 in USA. That number has also gone up significantly due to the impact of Covid on the industry. Some of the companies that hire these professionals are Genpact, Accenture, Amazon, HCL Technologies and many more.

Now, let me tell you why I think that this stream of study will gain popularity. Why do I think that in the coming days using 6 sigma tools can become a mandate?

Businesses are constantly moving towards cutting edge technology and innovation. We now have departments like operations transformation that are looking for newer ways of process redesigning. Even AI and ML are being used wherever possible to fill up the gaps that are identified as areas of opportunity. Covid has acted as a booster for six sigma professionals as companies try to embrace automation even further.
